Toddlers with Big Feelings/Sensory Overwhelm
When big behaviors are rooted in big sensations and even bigger feelings.
Toddlers are wired to feel deeply—but sometimes their systems get overwhelmed by sensations, transitions, or emotions they don’t yet have the tools to process. What may look like tantrums, clinginess, or shutdown is often a sign that their nervous system is struggling to stay regulated.
I support toddlers who:
-
Have frequent, intense meltdowns that seem to come out of nowhere
-
Are easily overwhelmed by noise, touch, or unpredictability
-
Struggle with transitions, changes in routine, or separation
-
Avoid or seek out certain sensations in ways that disrupt daily life
-
Swing between extremes: clingy and explosive, shutdown and overactive
Rather than using behavior charts or reward systems, this work meets your child where they are—in the body, in the sensory system, and in relationship.
This approach supports:
-
Regulation through co-regulation, rhythm, and gentle movement
-
Integration of retained reflexes that may be contributing to overwhelm
-
Safe expression of emotion without shame or suppression
-
Helping parents understand the why behind the behavior
-
Supporting your child in building capacity—not just coping
Big feelings aren’t a sign that something is wrong. They’re a signal of a growing system still learning how to stay connected, safe, and expressive at the same time.
